Habitat for Humanity of Telluride Region became an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International effective June 1. The Board of County Commissioners of San Miguel County has agreed to transfer land in Norwood for our first houses. Thanks to Art Goodtimes, Elaine Fischer and Vern Ebert. We plan to build six houses on this site beginning in 2007.

Our service area includes San Miguel County, Ouray County and the Rico Growth Area of Dolores County. Families that reside in the area will be eligible to apply for houses.

There are three basic requirements: (1) Demonstration of Need (income below 50% of median and residing in substandard housing; (2) Ability to Pay (Each house will cost the family $100,000, with Habitat for Humanity of Telluride Region taking a mortgage for the full amount at 0% interest for a monthly payment of $278 per month); and (3) Willingness to Partner (Each adult member of the family (over 18) volunteers 200 hours work, with a maximum of 600 hours.

We plan to have meetings in September in Rico, Norwood, Telluride and Ridgway to explain the eligibility requirements and start the application process.

Habitat for Humanity of Telluride Region is also soliciting donations of appliances, furniture and construction materials. These donations are tax deductible and will be used to assist us in raising money necessary to build houses in partnership with volunteers and selected families.
