Telluride, located in San Miguel County, Colorado was first used as a summer camp by Ute Indians. In the mid-1870’s a tent camp was established in the valley by miners in search of gold and silver. Originally called Columbia, the camp became a town in 1878, and changed its name to Telluride.

Telluride opened a Ski Resort in 1973, it hold wonderful hiking paths and you can find a variety of cultural events and festivals.

San Miguel County is one of 64 counties in Colorado, and has a population of approximately 7,500. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,288  (3,337 km²), of which, 1,286 square miles (3,332 km²) of it is land and 2  square miles (5 km²) of it (0.15%) is water.
Other than Telluride it holds several more places that could be of interest, including the the Town of Mountain Village, Ophir, Sawpit, Placerville and Norwood, just to name some of the more populated areas. Two school districts are within the county, the schools are located in Telluride and Norwood.

Medical services can also be obtained in Telluride and Norwood. A variety of shopping can be done within the county, but if you prefer a Walmart or Target, you will have to travel to Montrose, about 37 miles away (distance from Telluride or Norwood).

For more serious shopping or if you want to visit a Mall Grand Junction is about 128 miles away.
